Environmental change and quality of life

Solutions are based on multidisciplinary integration and active participation in policy-making to ensure clean air, unpolluted drinking water, soil quality, quality of life and geothermal energy for subsistence food production.

We are using our knowledge and scientific knowledge to build a society where we use natural resources responsibly, sustainably and with the least possible impact on the environment. Our work is focused on defining and researching themes that contribute to understanding environmental change and on implementing preventive rather than curative action.

Strategic objectives

1. Developing principles of environmental forensics to comprehensively monitor the dynamics of substances in the environment (air, water, sediment, soil, urban media) from source to sink.

2. Participation in the preparation of strategic documents and activities in the field of environmental protection and the search for and sustainable use of water resources.

Activities

To achieve these two strategic objectives, we are implementing the following activities:

  • We are developing methods to characterise the natural background of selected parameters in soil and groundwater, including the identification of geogenic contaminants.
  • We are developing identification and methods to monitor changes in the content and occurrence of inorganic and organic pollutants in all media.
  • We study the impact of pollution on soil and groundwater conditions (chemical pollution, microbiological pollution).
  • We develop research to study the consequences and remedy pollution and degradation by Remediation of soil/water/sediments, based on process research and developing monitoring methods.
  • We are developing research to link geology with the medical profession to study the impact on public health.
  • We are actively involved in the preparation of strategic documents on environmental protection and the sustainable use of water resources
  • We are involved in official action protocols for expert advice on ecological disasters (from traffic, industry, etc.), and we plan preventive measures and predict potential impacts.
  • We are stepping up research to find additional sources of groundwater.
  • Monitor in the light of climate change and active anthropogenic activities changeWe monitor quantitative and qualitative trends in water resources.
