The GEOFRAME‑BOVEC project provides essential scientific support for DOVE (Drilling Overdeepened Alpine Valleys) Phase 2 initiative, conducted under the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). DOVE aims to reconstruct Quaternary glacial, environmental, and climatic history of the Alps using sediment cores drilled from glacially overdeepened valleys. For the Slovenian drilling site in the Bovec Basin, plausible interpretation of the recovered core requires a robust geomorphological, sedimentological, and geochronological framework of the wider Bovec Basin, which is the main aim of this project.
The project focuses on three specific objectives:
1. Producing a detailed geomorphological map of glacial and glacially related landforms in the wider Bovec Basin using geomorphological mapping, sedimentological analysis and geophysical investigation.
2. Determining the ages of key landforms and sediments using state-of-the-art geochronological methods.
3. Synthesizing geomorphological, sedimentological, and geochronological data to reconstruct the extent and timing of past glaciations and providing a contextual basis for drill-core interpretations.
The project work programme is divided into three scientific work packages. The first focuses on characterizing palaeo‑glacial landforms and deposits through extensive fieldwork, including geomorphological mapping, sedimentological and clast lithological analyses, and geophysical investigations. The second provides the chronological framework by applying radiocarbon dating to glaciogenic deposits and integrating newly obtained ages with previously published chronological data from the area. The third delivers a spatio‑temporal reconstruction of glacial evolution through the integration of spatial and chronological datasets, reconstructing the extent and timing of palaeo‑glaciations and supplying the glacial context needed for borehole interpretation.
