Onset of Pliocene-Early Pleistocene sedimentation in the southeastern Alpine foothills (Velenje Basin, Slovenia) and impact on the palaeoenvironment

In this study, the authors focus on Pliocene - early Pleistocene river terraces in the Velenje Basin. Using geomorphological, sedimentological, petrographical and chronological analyses, they investigated the basin in terms of morphostratigraphy, sedimentary environment, origin and age of gravel deposits. Two groups of river terraces were identified by geomorphological mapping. The lithofacies analysis of the four selected profiles showed that the gravels were deposited in a meandering environment and in a transitional environment between intermittent and meandering flow. The gravels are composed of lithologies originating from the Pápa River basin. The sediments of the oldest terrace have been dated by cosmogenic nuclides to 2.7 ± 0.3 million years. The data were used to interpret a pronounced regional tectonic uplift between the Pliocene and the early Pleistocene, which led to the incision of the river network and the subsequent formation of the terraces.
