The geological map of the eastern part of the Krško basin at a scale of 1 : 25,000 is based on the results of the Basic Geological Map of Slovenia at a scale of 1 : 100,000, mainly on the sheets Celje, Rogatec, Novo mesto and Zagreb, and on the geological mapping of the Krško basin at a working scale of 1 : 5,000, which was carried out in 1996 as part of the extensive interdisciplinary research for the assessment of the seismic hazard at the site of the Krško nuclear power plant. The production of the map has been continued since 1997 in the framework of various projects.

During the geological mapping, extensive surveys and construction works were carried out in the Krško basin area on large infrastructure projects, such as the construction of the Sava hydroelectric power plants, the Dolenjska highway, preparations for the construction of a landfill for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste, and others. Thus, in addition to field geological data, data from other dedicated and complementary surveys (geophysical, geomechanical, seismological and geodetic surveys) and data from drilling were also available for the mapping. This variety of data has enabled a more reliable interpretation of the surface and deep geological structure of the area investigated.
