Geological map of Kras 1: 100.000

Geological research in Kras region has been carried out over the last twenty years within the framework of various research programmes and projects implemented by the GeoZS and co-financed by the Public Agency for Research Activities of the Republic of Slovenia.

Much of the research, led by Dr Bogdan Jurkovšek, was aimed at producing a new geological map, while in parallel a number of other geological investigations were carried out to increase knowledge of the Karst as a unique natural and cultural area.

The Geological Map of Kras 1 : 100,000 is an updated combined map of the Kras and was based on the Formation Geological Map of the Southern Part of the Trieste-Komen Plateau 1 : 50,000 (Jurkovšek et al., 1996) and the Geological Map of the Northern Part of the Trieste-Komen Plateau 1 : 25,000 (Jurkovšek, 2008, 2010), both based on the methods of sequence stratigraphy, which allows for a broad correlation of genetically related layers. The map is of an overview character and without a detailed topographic base, but it includes all the main lithostratigraphic units and the basic structural-tectonic elements necessary for general use. More detailed descriptions of the lithostratigraphic units are given in the legend.
