The aim of the INRIGeoTeam project is to achieve a scientific breakthrough in understanding the processes of reinjecting thermally used groundwater to heterogeneous and anisotropic intergranular aquifers of the Pannonian Basin and to assess the regional hydraulic and thermal impact of this process. The fundamental scientific starting point of the INRIGeoTeam research is that the expected decrease in injectability during reinjection into the Upper Pannonian intergranular geothermal aquifer in the Pannonian Basin is the result of a combination of several processes. These are related to in-situ geological factors at the regional, local and/or micro level, the ignorance and disregard of which in the dimensioning phase of the reinjection well and the surface use system and also during the dynamics of the doublet operation can cause undesirable physical, chemical or biological processes between the bedrock and the cooled and partly chemically altered thermal water, which lead to a noticeable decrease in injectability and “inefficiency” of the reinjection well. Our basic hypothesis is that reinjection into Upper Pannonian stratified, heterogeneous and anisotropic poorly lithified sandstone with dominant intergranular porosity is effective if the petrophysical and physico-chemical characteristics of this geological medium are taken into account and the prevailing risks for physical, chemical or biological processes that may reduce injectability are previously identified.
