We discovered evidence of a historic earthquake along the Raška Fault, May 2026
In May, our team conducted research in a paleoseismic trench to investigate how sedimentary environments in the area of today’s Virbašnji Dol valley below Vremščica have changed over the past tens of thousands of years in connection with climate change. The research confirmed a new branch of the Raška Fault that crosses the Virbašnji Dol valley. We first detected it remotely through geomorphological analyses, and then confirmed its existence through detailed geological fieldwork and geophysical surveys. Together with research already conducted at other locations, the seismic history of the Raška Fault is thus gradually being pieced together.
