Due to its steep and rugged terrain, complex geological conditions, heavy tropical rainfall, and rapid changes in land use, Rwanda is highly susceptible to landslides. Studies and national initiatives have so far provided valuable insights into the processes and spatial patterns of landslides, but information on them remains too fragmented. The PanAfGeo+ Country Window Rwanda project supports a standardized inventory of landslides, the assessment of susceptibility and risk of their occurrence, and a monitoring and early warning approach through capacity building and international cooperation. We expect that the integration of these approaches will improve stakeholder decision-making based on actual conditions on the ground and increase resilience to landslide hazards.
