Workshop on the litho- and hydrostratigraphic features of the western Pannonian Basin, 19 January 2026
In January 2026, GeoZS hosted experts from Hungary who shared with us the latest knowledge on the development and properties of deltaic systems and geothermal reservoirs in the Pannonian Basin. Our aim is to model the heterogeneity of the regional geothermal aquifer so that we can better design efficient reinjection wells. Understanding sedimentary environments and stratigraphic sequences is crucial for this. Prof. Orsolya Sztanó (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest), Dr. Ábel Markó (Regulated Activities Authority), Dr. Hawkar Ali Abdulhaq (University of Szeged) and Catarina Conceição de Castro (Doctoral School of Earth Sciences) shared their knowledge and experience with the GeoZS and NTF UL researchers.
We delved into the interpretation of borehole cores, carotation diagrams and deep geophysics, geostatistical geological modelling and the use of large-scale language models to build 3D geological models. The approaches presented in the workshop will be applied to ongoing research projects such as INRIGeoTeam, InnoGeoPot and GeoAI.
