Content

Capitan Maurice is an international project funded by the Interreg Central Europe programme that addresses growing climate challenges in urban areas, from drought and water shortages to increasingly intense rainfall and flooding. The project aims to strengthen urban resilience to climate change by promoting sustainable rainwater management, blue-green infrastructure, appropriate spatial planning, and early warning systems for extreme weather events.

Effective solutions for rainwater management have already been developed through numerous European projects. However, their application often remains limited to the regions or cities where they were originally developed. Capitan Maurice focuses on transferring, adapting and further developing proven solutions from previous Interreg projects and applying them in new urban contexts across Central Europe. Their effectiveness and suitability for local conditions will be tested in six new pilot areas.

The Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) leads a work package focused on implementing spatial management solutions to strengthen urban resilience. Building on the results of the MAURICE and KaraMon projects, GeoZS is contributing to the transfer of a methodology for mapping soil infiltration capacity to the city of Koprivnica, Croatia. It is also responsible for transferring and adapting an early warning system for extreme rainfall events to the city of Pécs, Hungary.

The experience gained through the pilot activities will be used to develop practical tools and guidelines for local authorities, utility companies and spatial planners, supporting them in integrating climate resilience and sustainable water management into everyday planning and investment decisions.

The project has a total budget of EUR 1,157,378.30, of which 80% is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Central Europe programme.
