On the occasion of its 70th anniversary in October 2016, the Geological Institute of Slovenia published the Geological Atlas of Slovenia, edited by Dr Matevž Novak and Dr Nina Rman, and containing contributions from 44 authors from ten of the most important Slovenian institutions dealing with geological data.

The book, which comprises 124 pages in a large format of 23 x 34 cm, is the first comprehensive collection of geological and all geologically related data in Slovenia, and few other countries can boast such a collection in book form. The maps are grouped into 11 thematic sections: basic geological maps, geophysical maps, geothermal maps, hydrogeological maps, geochemical maps, hydrogeochemical maps, mineral maps, engineering geological maps and maps of geological hazards, geomorphological maps, pedological maps and maps of geological natural heritage.

59 charts are presented with brief descriptions, supplemented by expert literature. Most of the maps are at a scale of 1 : 1 000 000 000, but a few are at a scale of 1 : 1 800 000. The Atlas is bilingual, written in Slovene and English.

The Geological Atlas of Slovenia makes Slovenian geological spatial data more transparent and accessible. The material collected reflects the high practical value of geoscientific research and the resulting data for spatial planning, space management and environmental monitoring, and sustainable development. The modern design of the Atlas will make an important contribution to recognising the importance of geology in everyday life.
