CONCORDIA focuses on the shared challenges of the cross-border region between Italy and Slovenia, which is geologically diverse and highly exposed to earthquake and landslide risks. These natural phenomena pose serious threats to local communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems, and often trigger cascading events that further amplify their impacts.
The main objective of the project is to improve disaster response efficiency and strengthen cross-border cooperation between Italy and Slovenia. By harmonizing monitoring systems, developing integrated real-time alert tools, and standardizing methodologies, the project will enhance capacities for emergency management. The outcome will be a reduction in the social and economic consequences of earthquakes and landslides, as well as stronger safety and resilience of communities. Expected impacts include faster response times and better decision-making, supported by shared resources and coordinated action.
To achieve these goals, CONCORDIA introduces innovative solutions:
- Establishing a dense network of affordable accelerometers and GNSS sensors for more precise detection of earthquakes and ground movements linked to landslides,
- Using collected data in advanced models to generate harmonized outputs such as real-time shaking maps and tailored impact scenarios,
- Developing a user-friendly digital platform that will provide civil protection agencies and other stakeholders with immediate access to critical data, enabling seamless coordination and rapid emergency response.
The project’s results include harmonized exposure models, real-time impact scenarios, and improved monitoring systems designed for cross-border interoperability. These tools will not only enhance emergency response but also support long-term planning and risk reduction strategies. Key beneficiaries include civil protection agencies, local authorities, scientific institutions, and cross-border communities, all of whom will gain access to standardized data and tools for more effective management of shared risks. Furthermore, the integration of hazard and exposure data into dynamic impact models will strengthen regional resilience and provide valuable insights for crisis management and strategic planning.
