Assessment of the potential impact of waste incineration and co-incineration on human health: a case study of the Salonit Anhovo cement plant

Content
The objectives of the research project are to:
- determine the relationship between the operation of the Salonit Anhovo cement plant and the health status of the population by using available environmental data on air quality, water quality and soil quality as well as available health data in the study area around the Salonit Anhovo cement plant (hereinafter: the model area). This requires a temporal and spatial analysis of the relationship between environmental and health data at the population level. In case the environmental data obtained is not sufficient, additional sampling and analyses will be carried out (pilot study);
- determine the extent of Salonit Anhovo's influence on air quality using appropriate air pollution dispersion modelling;
- assess the relationship between the exposure of the population to environmental risk factors and health;
- based on the study results, propose measures to improve the environmental conditions and the health of the population.
The research consortium, led by National Institute of Public Health, is composed of University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy, Slovenian Environment Agency, National Laboratory of Health, Environment and Food, Biotechnical Faculty UL, University of Nova Gorica, Jožef Stefan Institute and GeoZS.
