The Isotopic Composition of Precipitation and Its Role in Forest Hydrology in the Context of Climate Change: The Case of Slovenian Lowland Forests

The study described in this article presents the first systematic analysis of changes in air temperature and precipitation over the past 65 years in two lowland forests in Slovenia—Murski Šumi and Krakovski Gozd—combined with an investigation of the isotopic composition of precipitation. Understanding isotopic variability in precipitation is essential for assessing future water availability in light of climate change. Knowledge of precipitation amplitudes, together with isotope amplitudes in groundwater, enables the estimation of hydraulic retention time (HRT), a key parameter for groundwater management and for integrating groundwater-dependent ecosystems into strategic groundwater management planning.
