Hosting of a Canadian PhD student in Geothermal Engineering with INRS, April-July 2025

Between April and July 2025, GeoZS is hosting PhD student Fiona M. Chapman from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Quebec, Canada. Her work is part of the ARIS-funded project Geo-OPT - Using Optical Fibres to Assess the Effects of Heat Transfer and Groundwater Flow in the Subsurface. Together with our young researcher Karl Bork and under the mentorship of Associate Prof. Dr. Nina Rman, Fiona will be the first in Slovenia to carry out measurements of geothermal parameters of the soil using optical fibres and heating cables. The measurements will be carried out in three boreholes located in different geological environments.

Fione gave a lecture on "Geothermal Energy in Canada: geological provinces, local development, and field techniques for resource assessment" at the NTF on Thursday 5 June, which was attended by 17 participants. She presented her geothermal research in the Yukon, which is the basis for her PhD thesis, and her research work in Slovenia.
