In April, GeoZS experts Dr Klemen Teran and Dr Gisela Domej visited Kyrgyzstan, where they established important links with key partners in the preparation of a new project application. During their visit, they met with representatives of the Department of Intervention and Monitoring of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and with representatives of the World Food Programme of the United Nations.

With its long experience in studying geological hazards, modelling the probability of landslides, rockfalls and mudflows, and developing early warning systems, GeoZS can make an important contribution to improving preparedness and response to natural disasters in Kyrgyzstan. Our expertise in geo-informed risk and data-driven decision-making already provides innovative methods and technical support to strengthen the capacity of local institutions.

Cooperation will focus on:

• transfer of expertise and good practice
• adapting the GeoS methodology to local natural and social conditions
• development of advanced tools for predicting the probability of landslides, rock slides and mudflows

As part of their visit, the experts also took part in an international conference "Monitoring and Forecasting Climate-Related Natural Disasters", held in Bishkek. At the event, they presented warning maps of landslide and hillslide probabilities and the Slovenian Avalanche Warning System. MASPREM, based on advanced data analysis and the development of GeoZS.
