Thermal Response Test
Description of equipment
Manufacturer: UBeG GmbH & Co. KG, Germany
The Thermal Response Test (TRT) device allows the determination of the thermal response between a vertical heat exchanger (geoprobe) and the rock. This can directly determine the effective thermal conductivity of the investigated area and allow the correct sizing of the planned closed geothermal system.
The main advantage of the method is that it directly provides thermal conductivity values along the entire borehole, taking into account local hydrogeological factors (presence of groundwater) and the physical properties of the surrounding sediment or rock (mineral composition, porosity, saturation, density, grain size), which can provide significantly different results than those obtained in the laboratory or in the field with a needle probe, as the measurements are carried out on a smaller sample size and consequently do not capture all relevant factors.
According to the German VDI standard and the Guidelines for shallow geothermal drilling up to 300 m depth (Prestor et al., 2021), the test is recommended for installations where more than 30 kW of power is planned, or if a larger array of geoprobes is planned.
