Miocene ostracod groups of eastern Slovenia

Content
The main aim of the PhD thesis is to determine the composition of ostracod groups in Sarmatian and Pannonian sediments in the Kozjansko area, Krško Basin and Prekmurje region. Ostracods are microscopic crustaceans that occur in a variety of environments, both aquatic and terrestrial. Ostracods are studied not only by biologists but also by geologists, as their fossils first appear in the late Cambrian era. Research on ostracods in these sediments is scarce and partly unpublished. Ostracod biozones are defined on the basis of specific taxon and compared with those of benthic foraminifera and nannoplankton. The salinity and relative depth of the sea at the time of sedimentation are determined, giving us information on the local variations in the sedimentation area resulting from the variability of the palaeo-coastline. By comparing the sequence of biotic changes, we will try to establish the links between the different sedimentary basins and the wider area.
