T-Shaped Master Programme for Innovative Mineral Resource Exploration (TIMREX)

Content

The TIMREX EIT-labelled MSc programme aimed to train earth science specialists, primarily geologists and geological engineers, to meet the EU's needs for mineral resource exploration. The geographical location of the four partner universities helped improve the mineral exploration workforce supply for the EU in two of its main mining and exploration hubs, Scandinavia and the ESEE region.

The TIMREX programme trained T-shaped earth science specialists with a solid background in the classical disciplines of geology and geophysics, complemented by modern 3D modelling, data processing, and interpretation skills. Additionally, it developed boundary-crossing competencies, including expertise in innovative mineral exploration techniques and technologies used in the field, laboratories, underground, and underwater environments. Students also received training in sustainability, social responsibility, and the social licence to operate.

The University of Miskolc (Hungary) coordinated the programme, while GeoZS served as an advisory institution, contributing to curriculum design (particularly in innovative exploration and fieldwork methods) and the process of obtaining the EIT label. GeoZS also participated in promoting the programme and recruiting students from Slovenia, Croatia, and the Western Balkan countries for the study activities. We provided students with the opportunity to complete an internship at GeoZS under the mentorship of our researchers.
