Water-Friendly Livestock Farming Handbook
The aim of the Water Friendly Livestock Farming Handbook is to introduce farmers to specific technologies and best practises that help reduce the negative impact of livestock farming on groundwater and surface water. Research shows that livestock farming is a significant source of nitrate pollution in Slovenia, with nitrates currently being the most critical pollutant of groundwater. Due to excessive nitrate levels, three groundwater bodies in Slovenia are categorised as being in poor chemical status: the Savinja Valley, the Drava–Ptuj Plain and Prekmurje.
The manual was produced in the framework of the project "EIP Water - Reducing pressures from agriculture on surface and groundwater". The main objective of the EIP Water project is to introduce more environmentally or water-friendly agricultural practices for crop production, both in livestock farming and in arable, horticultural, viticultural and hop production.
