The map shows wider Kozjansko, an area between Sotla and Savija and Rogaška Slatina and Podsreda, altogether 500 km2. There are rocks of Pre-tertiary basement, from Carboniferous and Permian clastites, to a series of Triassic to Cretaceous, mostly carbonate, formations. They outcrop in the Trojane, Rudnica and Litija anticlines. The major part of the sheet, however, show more than 2 000 meters thick series of Tertiary clastites (marls, conglomerates, sandstones, sands, etc.) and lithotamnian limestones of Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene age, in some places with volcanic rocks and their tuffs. All these rocks outcrop in the Celje, Laško, Planina and Senovo synclines.

This map is one of so-called new geological maps of Slovenia and was produced according to the OGK 2 principle. Mapping was done at scale 1: 10 000 within the frame of research of Tertiary basins. For Tertiary rocks, the stratigraphic division for Paratethys was used. Therefore, lithological formations can be correlated among the neighbouring countries. During the geological mapping some novelties were found, such as new outcrops of some rocks, some stratigraphic formations were, apart from classical paleontological methods (foraminifera, ostracoda), determined also with nanoplancton, conodonts and microfauna and age determination of volcanites.

The geological map was digitally generated. Columns, cross-sections and legends are bilingual, in Slovene and English.

The map shows an area which is rich with thermal and mineral water resources. It includes three large baths and health resorts, e.g. Rogaška Slatina, Podčetrtek and Laško. Therefore, the map has also economic and environmental meaning. It provides the basis for spatial planning and potential spatial interventions in the Kozjansko region.
