Intense precipitation and flooding can cause erosion and transport of large amounts of both natural and anthropogenic material. The redistribution and remobilisation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is particularly concerning. The ENLIL project addresses the impacts of such weather events on pollutant displacement, with a focus on PTEs, changes in their physico-chemical properties, and, to some extent, the effects of these events on human health. These types of events and processes are especially pressing and scientifically relevant in previously contaminated areas, such as the Upper Me\u017ea Valley, which is burdened with lead, zinc, and cadmium pollution and it was heavily affected by floods in August 2023. Therefore, the Upper Me\u017ea Valley was selected as the project's test area.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The main objectives of the project are:<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e76f8c9924025ece95eed4e0f71cf907d\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To determine the consequences of extreme weather events on the geochemical properties of the test area and identify any changes in environmental contamination before and after such events;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eba2a197df5cf9607245289bc0bd0a339\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To identify areas that were affected by erosion and material accumulation during the extreme weather event;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e130557a4aaed03da3729ccc06cfda9ad\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To assess the factors influencing the redistribution and changes in the physico-chemical properties of elements and their solid carriers under the impact of extreme rainfall events;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e2455d45aca3cc0e324b95b67d70aac38\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To evaluate the contribution of mining waste to the pollution of watercourses and river sediments in the context of extreme rainfall events;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ea676ace0cae0618f1506688eaf2bd638\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To assess the sources and stability of solid element carriers before and after the event;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e34ad30470e770656d7491d8ef1f01e75\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To assess the health risks to children in the Upper Me\u017ea Valley, considering all sources and pathways of lead exposure;<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e1aec75d598dc9532fe777ff8e3fbd168\">\n<p>            <span lang=\"en-SI\"><\/span><span lang=\"en-SI\" dir=\"ltr\">To consolidate existing and newly acquired data on the geochemical state of the environment in the Upper Me\u017ea Valley into a shared database, which will serve as the basis for further geochemical investigations in this area and beyond.<\/span>        <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>    <span lang=\"EN-GB\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span
