GeoZS is participating in three projects that study microplastics in groundwater. A doctoral research project is linked to the ARIS GWMicroplast project. Both projects are investigating the presence and transport of microplastics in Slovenia\u2019s groundwater. What exactly is the research focusing on?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microplastics have become one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time\u2014not only because of their impact on nature, but also because of the potential risks to human health. Although we often hear about microplastics in the oceans and rivers, it is less well known that these tiny particles also end up in groundwater, which is the main source of drinking water in Slovenia. At the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS), we have therefore decided to use modern research approaches and innovative methods to investigate how microplastics enter groundwater, what their pathways are, and how we can use this knowledge to contribute to the protection of the environment and human health. Our efforts are based on interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of new tools that enable us to address this complex issue in a comprehensive and responsible manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the ARIS GWMicroPlast projects and the associated doctoral research, we are conducting a comprehensive study of the presence, origin, and behavior of microplastics in Slovenian groundwater. Microplastics are tiny, water-insoluble polymer particles smaller than 5 millimeters that enter groundwater through various pathways as a result of different human activities. Although they are often associated with surface waters, research confirms that they are also present in groundwater, which is the main source of drinking water in Slovenia. We pay particular attention to studying the transport processes of microplastics through various geological media. In doing so, we focus primarily on gravel aquifers, which are particularly vulnerable to contamination due to their high permeability. Experimental studies in lysimeters, where we investigate the dynamics of microplastics in the unsaturated zone, also constitute an important part of our research. We place great emphasis on developing and improving methods for the reliable detection of microplastics and the identification of their sources, as concentrations in groundwater are very low and the risk of sample contamination is high. We are developing innovative sampling devices. Our goal is to ensure more representative samples and thereby contribute to a better understanding of the risks to groundwater resources and to the long-term protection of the environment and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The second MANCA project is aimed at advancing research on microplastics in geological environments. What activities are you carrying out, and what goals are you pursuing as part of the project?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RSF MANCA project\u2014Microplastics in the Geosphere\u2014aims to establish and consolidate a research team for systematic research on microplastics in geological environments at GeoZS. The key objective is to bring together researchers from various disciplines (geology, chemistry, biology) and create a stable, interdisciplinary group that will be capable of comprehensively addressing the issue of microplastics in the geosphere over the long term. We place special emphasis on the development and standardization of sampling procedures in various environments, as well as on sample preparation and analysis, since reliable methods form the foundation for further research and participation in national and international projects. The MANCA project enabled the establishment of the foundations for a microplastics research laboratory and the introduction of modern analytical techniques, particularly Raman spectroscopy, along with the training of researchers. The goal of the \u201cMicroplastics in the Geosphere\u201d project is therefore to establish a cohesive, competent, and long-term sustainable research team capable of conducting cutting-edge research on microplastics in the geosphere, successfully integrate into the international research community, and use its findings to support the protection of the environment, water resources, and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One of the goals of this project is to establish a microplastics laboratory at GeoZS. What will be the primary function of this laboratory?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The establishment of a microplastics laboratory at GeoZS is crucial for ensuring a controlled environment designed to prevent contamination, which enables reliable and comparable results. The laboratory is not merely a space for analyzing samples, but a comprehensive research center that integrates methodological development, staff training, and long-term research projects. In this way, we ensure high-quality data, which serves as the foundation for scientific research and the formulation of environmental policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Published<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>This is a scientific article in the form of a video protocol on a method for sampling microplastics in groundwater using a custom-built sampler. Could you briefly describe how the sampling and identification of microplastics in groundwater actually take place?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sampling microplastics in groundwater is quite challenging, primarily because the concentration of particles is very low. Therefore, we filter large volumes of water\u2014approximately one cubic meter per sample\u2014and our system allows us to take three parallel samples of one cubic meter each to obtain representative data. The system developed by our research team is patented (SLO-P-202300155; patent pending with the EPO\u2014EP24217168.4). Our research team has developed a comprehensive protocol that describes the entire process: from sampling with the patented system, through the transfer of filters to the laboratory and visual assessment of particles, to chemical identification using FTIR or Raman spectroscopy. We pay special attention to preventing contamination, and the protocol also complies with the requirements of the EU Drinking Water Directive. The entire approach, together with <a href=\"https:\/\/app.jove.com\/v\/68652\/sampling-and-identification-of-microplastics-in-groundwater\">video guides<\/a>, provides a standardized and reliable method for sampling and analyzing microplastics in groundwater, enabling researchers to obtain comparable and long-term usable data in a field that remains under-researched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Or<\/strong> <strong>Based on existing research, can you already answer the question of what the most significant sources of microplastics entering groundwater are, and how to reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microplastics do not enter groundwater directly from their sources, but rather through various indirect pathways. The main media through which microplastic particles are transported into aquifers are surface waters, soil, and specific point sources. Surface waters, such as rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, transport microplastics from wastewater treatment plant discharges, sewage sludge, urban, industrial, and agricultural areas, and atmospheric precipitation. Particles can become trapped in sediments, but when flow conditions change, they are released again and migrate into groundwater aquifers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soil and the unsaturated zone act as indirect carriers of microplastics, which are transported into deeper layers through rainwater infiltration, soil organisms, roots, and macropores. Agricultural activities, such as the use of plastic mulch or irrigation with wastewater, are one of the factors\u2014but not the only ones\u2014that influence the local presence of microplastics. Specific point sources, such as wastewater treatment plants, septic tanks, industrial discharges, and unregulated landfills, contribute an additional portion of the particles. In karst areas, microplastics can very quickly enter groundwater through cracks and sinkholes. To reduce the amount of microplastics in the environment, a combination of measures is important: reducing the use of single-use plastics, more efficient waste management, improved wastewater treatment, the use of alternative biodegradable materials, and the standardization of monitoring and research. This approach enables a better understanding of the pathways of microplastics and the development of effective measures to reduce their release into the environment. Research on microplastics in groundwater is still in its early stages, but we already know that integrating knowledge, developing reliable methods, and acting responsibly toward the environment are essential for the long-term protection of our water resources. By establishing a microplastics laboratory, developing innovative sampling devices, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, we at GeoZS have laid a solid foundation for further research and effective monitoring in the future.
