Regional Geology<\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

The Department of Regional Geology conducts a wide range of basic regional geological research, which - taking into account the temporal dimension - enables the understanding and identification of the three-dimensional geological structure of Slovenia. Fundamental studies such as petrographic, sedimentological, stratigraphic and palaeontological analyses of rocks as well as tectonic, geomorphological and geophysical studies form the basis for the interpretation of the dynamics of geological processes. These processes are the key to understanding geological hazards (earthquakes, landslides). Knowledge of the geological structure is essential for the use of geothermal energy and serves as a basis for the planning and placement of various infrastructure projects. In the Regional Geology Department, we are also committed to promoting the importance of natural geological heritage, which is crucial for raising public awareness of the value of geology. Our work takes place within the framework of national and international programmes and projects. The results are integrated into basic and thematic geological maps and models that serve as a basis for planning and managing the sustainable development of our society. \n

Mineral Resources and Geochemistry<\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

The researchers and experts of the Department of Mineral Resources and Geochemistry carry out fundamental, applied and developmental tasks as well as geological investigations in the field of mineral resource deposit evaluation. With our knowledge and experience gained both home and abroad, we contribute to the implementation of the European Raw Materials Initiative, which aims to improve self-sufficiency in raw materials. In accordance with the Mining Act, we also fulfil the tasks of public mining services. We investigate the processes, concentrations and distribution of chemical elements in various geological materials. The results of this research form the basis for understanding the chemical properties of the area under investigation and enable the long-term monitoring of man-made changes. These results are crucial for assessing the extent and sources of pollution, planning further investigations and implementing remediation measures. We also assess secondary raw material deposits (mining waste), both in terms of potential environmental impact and as a potential source of raw materials. \n

Groundwater - Hydrogeology<\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The activities of the Department of Groundwater \u2013 Hydrogeology focus on the analysis of the underground part of the water cycle, in particular on the study of the influence of the hydrogeological properties of rocks and natural and anthropogenic processes on the quantity and quality of groundwater in Slovenia and across borders. As part of local, national and European basic and applied research projects, we plan the optimal extraction of drinking, mineral, thermal and industrial water as well as irrigation water and the use of geothermal energy using heat pumps or thermal water. Our research aims to develop and improve methods for carrying out tracer and pumping tests, borehole measurements, chemical and isotopic water analyses and the use of mathematical models that help to identify, manage and plan the sustainable use and protection of groundwater resources more effectively. Through engineering hydrogeological investigations, we also contribute to the construction of buildings and infrastructure and to the identification of the causes of certain natural disasters. \n

Geological Information Centre<\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Geological Information Centre follows the principle of accessibility to spatial information and services in one place. By integrating geospatial data from different studies and projects and sharing this data between different users and applications, the Centre ensures greater efficiency, interoperability and better access to geological data and interpretation through information and communication technologies. We build and maintain a modern information system that complies with the European INSPIRE directive and enables access to and interoperability of geological data for research activities, the economy, the public sector for administrative procedures and for the implementation of European legislation through the eGeologija portal. \n

General Services<\/h2><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The General Services provide administrative, technical, accounting and organisational support for the operation of the Institute. They also support the work of the Executive Board and the Scientific Council of the Institute. The General Services organisational unit encompasses the activities of the Main Office, the Finances and Accounting, the Human Resources, the Legal Service, the Project Management Office, the Knowledge Transfer Office, the Public Relations service and Publishing and the Technical Services. The general services carry out and record public procurement procedures. They provide administrative support for large public tenders as well as administrative, technical and accounting support for project management. They manage the quality management system, which is certified according to the ISO 9001:2015 standard. General Services are also responsible for the management and maintenance of the Institute's property, vehicle fleet and investments. \n
