As much as 98 % of drinking water in Slovenia is extracted from underground resources. 42 % of all protected water resources and 53 % of all water protection areas are located in karst areas. Karst areas have specific hydrodynamic characteristics, which is important for karst water resources management. A reliable map of karstified areas in Slovenia poses, therefore, a basis for most of the activities related to the management of groundwater bodies and water resources, such as the determination of hydrogeochemical characteristics of aquifers, degree of groundwater vulnerability and as support in placement of ecologically problematic objects into space. The content of the map is explained in detail in the supplementary explanatory booklet.

Map of spatial distribution and karstification intensity of surficial karst areas in Slovenia 1 : 250.000 was produced within the frame of a research project J1-2349 – Spatial model of hydrochemical composition of groundwater in Slovenia in GIS environment, which was founded by the Slovenian research agency and the Geological Survey of Slovenia.

The map is accompanied by an explanatory booklet in Slovenian and English.
